How to find a Claude Code Artifact again

Updated 8 October 2026 · for the Claude Code command line (version 2.1.294) on macOS

Claude Code can publish a page to claude.ai, called an Artifact, and the link is easy to lose once the conversation has scrolled on. You can list your Artifacts again, and the file is in a known place.

The short answer

  1. What is an Artifact?
  2. How do I list my Artifacts?
  3. How do I reopen the latest one?
  4. Where is the file?
  5. How do I find a link in an old transcript?
  6. Why didn't my browser open?
  7. How current is this guide?
  8. Collecting them automatically

What is a Claude Code Artifact?

An Artifact is an HTML or Markdown page that Claude writes and publishes to claude.ai, so you can open it in a browser. According to Anthropic's documentation it needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, a claude.ai login in Claude Code, Anthropic's own API (not Amazon Bedrock, Google's or Microsoft's platforms), and the enableArtifact setting not switched off. The published address looks like https://claude.ai/code/artifact/<id>.

How do I list my Artifacts?

Type /artifacts in Claude Code. It lists every Artifact your account owns and every one shared with you, from any session, so it works in a new session and after /clear. In the list, o opens the selected one in your browser and c copies its link, and Enter attaches it (Claude Code 2.1.216 and later). The command arrived in 2.1.208. Since 2.1.281 a small marker in the footer also opens it.

How do I reopen the latest one?

Press Ctrl+] to reopen the most recent Artifact from the current session. To browse them in a browser instead, the same list is at claude.ai/code/artifacts.

Where is the Artifact's file?

Unless you name a location, Claude writes the page to a temporary folder outside your project and publishes it from there, according to Anthropic's documentation. That is often the session's scratchpad, /private/tmp/claude-<your user id>/<project>/<session-id>/scratchpad/. Temporary folders get cleaned, and Claude Code deletes old sessions, so the published page outlives the file. The guide to where Claude Code saves images covers those folders, and the retention guide covers the 30-day limit.

How do I find a link in an old transcript?

Every session is saved as a transcript, and a link that appeared in the conversation is in it:

grep -ohE 'https://claude.ai/code/artifact/[0-9a-f-]{36}' ~/.claude/projects/*/*.jsonl | sort -u

That prints each link once, across every session. It only finds links that were shown as text, and it can't find them in transcripts Claude Code has already deleted.

Why didn't my browser open when Claude published?

Claude Code prints the link after the first publish in a session and opens your browser, unless the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_ARTIFACT_AUTO_OPEN is set to 0 or the prompt came through Remote Control. Since 2.1.285 the note about where to find your Artifacts isn't repeated after every publish, so later ones are easy to miss. /artifacts always shows them.

How current is this guide?

Checked against Claude Code 2.1.294 on macOS on 8 October 2026. Anthropic can change this in any release. If something here doesn't match what you see, run claude --version, compare it with 2.1.294, check Anthropic's documentation at code.claude.com/docs, or write to [email protected] and we'll update this page.

Detego is a Mac app that reads Claude Code's transcripts and shows each Artifact as a card in a shelf under your notch, next to the screenshots and images from the same prompt. A card opens the page in your browser, and the shelf never takes focus from the terminal.

Detego is paid, with a 14-day free trial and no account to create. Download the free trial for macOS 14 or later. Detego works with Claude Code and isn't affiliated with Anthropic.
